Underfloor heating: water or electric – which is better?

24-03-2025

Water underfloor heating technology

This option belongs to the segment of economical heating. The basic element of the underfloor heating system is pipes. Today, preference is given to those made of plastic or metal-plastic. Laying underfloor heating is possible in the following options:

  • Concrete

In this case, the water underfloor heating is installed very simply. The pipelines are attached to the thermal insulation, after which the underfloor heating is poured with concrete. The installation pie of the underfloor heating is from 80 to 140 mm. It includes thermal insulation materials, a heating pipe, PET film, reinforcing mesh, concrete screed and a finishing coating.

  • Floor type

It is based on wooden logs, on which the rough floor is laid. The difference from the first method is the absence of a "wet" installation process. The minimum height of the "pie" is 22 mm.

Both of these options for energy-efficient heating systems with a hydraulic heating system provide for mandatory regulation of the floor temperature. Such modern heating technologies can have sensor thermostats or the owner can control the temperature manually. The efficiency of room heating here is achieved by heating large areas with small resources.

Electric underfloor heating

Connecting an electric underfloor heating system is done differently. The floor heating elements can be in the form of heating mats, infrared film or a heating system with an electric cable. From the point of view of energy consumption, an electric floor is considered a more expensive option, since the costs of electric heating will be quite significant. At the same time, special attention is paid here to the safety of electric heating. It is also no less important to consider the pros and cons of electric heating.

  • Film electric underfloor heating

This is a thin warm floor for an apartment in the form of a film with a width of 50 cm to 1 m. This option is ideal for laminate or linoleum. Such an infrared warm floor is easily installed and dismantled, providing a total service life of up to 50 years. In case of damage, it is easily repaired, has overheating protection and a touch temperature regulator.

  • Sectional mats or cable underfloor heating

They are best suited for laying under tiles, ensuring uniform heat distribution. The main element of this option is heating cables, which are mounted directly into the screed. Moreover, in the case of sectional mats, they can be mounted directly into the adhesive base for tiles.

Installing electric heating under tiles has its advantages. The most important is ergonomics and simple installation. However, when choosing this method, it is worth correctly calculating the length of the cable for laying. Such systems necessarily include a floor thermostat, which provides optimal floor temperature in automatic mode.

For any variant of the heating system, it is important to pay attention to heat engineering calculations. In this case, its power, area of the room and type of floor covering are taken into account. In general, with the right approach to the installation process, both ceramic tiles with underfloor heating and film under linoleum will be absolutely safe and effective to use for all family members of the house or apartment.
