Choosing materials for finishing and restoring the bathroom with your own hands

When choosing a material for the walls, you can choose from the following finishing methods:

• painting;
• PVC panels;
• self-adhesive film;
• ceramic tiles.

The last type of coating is considered the most durable and reliable. For installation work, you will need tile adhesive and grout.

Ceilings are often painted with waterproof paint. An excellent solution would be to create a suspended structure made of plastic panels with built-in lamps or a stretch option.

You can lay linoleum on the floors, but the best option would be ceramic tiles. They do not create prerequisites for the appearance of fungus and mold, are easy to clean and disinfect.

Do-it-yourself bathroom renovation often involves replacing plumbing. If it is not possible to change the bathtub, you can update it using special products. Both acrylic and metal models can be updated. To do this, you need to buy the paint itself and some tools.

How to restore a bathtub with your own hands

The method of using the dye is described in detail in the instructions, which you should definitely read in advance. It is important to properly prepare the surface of the bathtub, which involves the following steps:

• thoroughly clean the surface with a detergent, after which it must be dried;
• using sandpaper or a drill with a grinding disk, carefully sand the enamel inside;
• wash off particles of the sanded material with clean running water;
• go over the entire surface of the bathtub with a degreaser;
• heat the product with a building hair dryer or by filling it with hot water;
• remove the siphon, placing a container underneath, cover all auxiliary elements with polyethylene, securing with tape;
• wipe the surface of the bathtub with a lint-free cloth until dry.

Next, apply the two-component enamel paint. Enameling should be done in two stages. After painting with the first layer, you need to wait a certain time, not allowing it to dry completely. The bottom needs to be restored especially carefully, since it bears the main load during operation.

The acrylic bathtub also needs to be thoroughly cleaned of dirt. White paint is sold ready for use. If you need a different color, you should add a colorant to the base and mix well. When applying, the sides are initially treated along the entire perimeter. Then the walls are painted vertically. Acrylic should be poured carefully for even distribution. Any bubbles that appear are removed with a spatula.

The walls are treated twice. The bottom is leveled with a spatula, after which you need to wait 10 minutes for the material to level out. The final stage will be edging the sides at the bottom to remove drops. A spatula or rag is used for this.

If you have at least some skills in construction and a desire to do repairs in the bathtub with your own hands, it will not be very difficult. But if you doubt your abilities, or are planning a major overhaul, it is better to seek help from professionals.
