Wet facade or ventilated facade: what to choose?

08-06-2026

What facades are most often chosen for a house?

As practice shows, the vast majority of homeowners choose one of two options for arranging the facade of a private house - the so-called wet or ventilated format. They differ in installation technology, having certain features and characteristics. In order to understand which of them - a wet facade or a ventilated facade is best suited for a particular situation, it is necessary to consider each of these methods in more detail.

Wet facade

This technology involves multilayer facade plaster and external insulation. In this case, building materials are fixed to the wall using adhesive for insulation and certain mixtures. The main purpose of installing this type is to heat-insulate the facade and apply decorative plaster.

The system itself is a so-called rigid building cake, which consists of three tightly fitting layers:

  • thermal insulation in the form of mineral wool or special foam for the facade or expanded polystyrene;
  • reinforcement - an adhesive base is applied to the facade insulation, which fixes the basic reinforcing layer, preventing cracking of the coating;
  • decorative layer - is formed using specialized plaster - such as pebble or bark beetle.

At the end of the work, the coating, which has dried well, is treated with facade paints in the desired color.

Ventilated facade

This technology involves finishing the building by mounting special panels on the insulation. An important difference of this method is the presence of a ventilation gap - an air layer between the thermal insulation material and the finishing finish of the facade. Due to air circulation, excess moisture will be removed to the outside.

The vent facade consists of the following elements:

  • a frame subsystem made of aluminum, stainless steel or galvanized metal;
  • insulation - mineral or basalt wool, which is fixed to the wall with dowels;
  • a membrane film to protect the insulation from moisture;
  • an air gap, the thickness of which is 2-5 cm.

External decorative panels act as cladding, which provide reliable protection from external factors.

Which is better - a wet facade or a ventilated facade: comparative characteristics

When choosing the right format, you should focus on your budget, the characteristics of the wall surface, and the desired decor. The comparison table will help you more accurately determine what will be better - a wet facade or a ventilated one.
