Facade waterproofing: why is it needed and how to do it correctly

Waterproofing of facade: materials used

Many manufacturers offer everything necessary for such work. Correctly selected materials for waterproofing the facade make it possible to increase the durability of the walls, prevent the appearance of cracks, chips, drips and other damage. The decision on how to treat the facade from water is made by the craftsmen depending on the type of coating, weather conditions, and the service life of the waterproofing materials. The classification of the products used implies the specifics of application, namely:

  • Sprayable facade water-repellent impregnations. They are sprayed on the surface to create a protective film, which often has an elastic texture.
  • Membrane facade coatings with moisture protection. They are special sheets that are glued to the surface to be treated.
  • Coating. Contain a polymer bitumen or cement base, provide for the treatment of facade plaster from moisture.
  • Injection. This is the so-called penetrating waterproofing for the facade on a polyurethane, cement or epoxy base, creating a moisture-proof barrier. Professional equipment is required for application.

In addition, hydrophobization of the facade in terms of substance composition is carried out by mineral, cement, polymer and bitumen materials. According to the degree of interaction with the surface, penetrating and surface substances are distinguished. The first format implies protection and prevention of facades from getting wet, providing the ability to penetrate deep into the concrete by 20-100 cm, changing the structure of concrete. Surface, respectively, work only on the surface.

How to make waterproofing of a facade

The process of waterproofing the base and facade is organized at the stage of construction of the house, but is also possible during major repairs. The cost of waterproofing the facade of the house is calculated taking into account the volume of work performed, the quantity and type of the selected material. In short, the answer to the question of how to waterproof the facade is as follows:

  • surface preparation - the facade is cleaned of dirt and dust, protrusions and irregularities are eliminated, cracks in the facade are sealed;
  • priming - a specialized impregnation is applied, with the help of which the required degree of adhesion with the base material is created;
  • application of the base layer - it is carried out taking into account the facade waterproofing technology declared by the material manufacturer;
  • protection of waterproofing - the insulation layer is protected from mechanical damage

Protection of the facade from moisture is an important process that requires special attention. At the same time, the most common errors in waterproofing facades are noted, which are as follows:

  • insufficient waterproofing layer;
  • saving on materials, which results in having to work with low-quality products;
  • failure to comply with technology - therefore, it is extremely important to study the manufacturer's recommendations before applying a water repellent to the facade;
  • ignoring the creation of a protective layer for waterproofing.

In any situation, if difficulties arise or there are no construction skills, you can always seek help from experienced professionals. Craftsmen will calculate the material, help with its selection, and also perform waterproofing of a brick, concrete or wooden facade.
