Facade repair: what materials to use?

10-03-2025

What are the types of facade structures?

Before deciding what materials for facade repair you need to buy, you should definitely consider what the building is made of. The peculiarities of the organization of work depend on this factor. For example, it is better to install a ventilated facade on wooden walls. In general, structures are divided into two types:

1. Wet - involve the use of building mixtures of different compositions.

2. Dry - they use fasteners in the form of screws, dowels, nails, etc.

Each of these options involves its own system of self-repair of the facade and the presence of certain tools and auxiliary materials.

In turn, ventilated structures must have a gap between the wall and the facade material and mineral wool to provide waterproofing. This option will be appropriate if the walls have the ability to "breathe". Non-ventilated - those that involve mounting the material directly on the wall.

What materials are suitable for facade renovation?

We have selected for you a list of the most commonly used materials that successfully combine practicality, economy and external aesthetics.

1. Plaster

Extremely popular in this segment is decorative plaster, which is considered the simplest method of decorating and protecting walls. Budget proposals include cement-sand plaster, which can be prepared independently if you have basic ingredients. Quite often, after its application, special paints are used for the facade, thanks to which an attractive appearance of the house is created. And such an option as acrylic plaster is considered a durable, aesthetic coating that ensures long-term use.

2. Natural and artificial stone

It is considered the most reliable and durable material. The significant advantages of stone include environmental friendliness, resistance to temperature extremes and environmental influences. The extremely high-quality surface design is also noted.

3. Facing brick

This is a special type of brick that provides a unique design. This material is divided into the following varieties:

  • clinker brick - made from special plastic grades of clay with subsequent pressing and firing;
  • ceramic brick - most often used in repairs of external walls, made from clay by firing;
  • hyperpressed brick - its composition includes cement, shell rock and some additives;
  • silicate brick - a budget material from a sand-cement mixture, processed by autoclaving.

4. Porcelain stoneware

It is made from quartz sand and clay with the addition of feldspars and water. The material is processed by the method of semi-dry pressing. In terms of its strength indicators, porcelain stoneware is practically in no way inferior to natural stone.

5. Facade tile

It can be ceramic or concrete. Its difference from ordinary tiles is in the lower porosity of the surface, due to which the material does not absorb water. Products of this type are available to users in a wide variety of colors, textures, sizes, and design.

6. Decorative siding

It is considered quite affordable, providing for a large range in production. Siding has good thermal insulation properties, and therefore it is often used not only for facade insulation, but also for the entire house. Manufacturers offer the following material options:

  • vinyl siding - a polymer material, popular in private construction, found in imitation of stone, wood, brick;
  • wooden - has a profile in the form of a beam or board, is made of dried wood treated with antiseptics;
  • metal - a material made of aluminum or steel, covered with a layer of primer or polymers.
  • cement - obtained by mixing and pressing cement and cellulose fibers.

Another popular material is facade panels. These are sandwich panels of several layers or facade cassettes, which belong to the so-called "dry" method.

The choice of facing material depends on a multifactorial analysis of the characteristics of the house and on the user's own preferences.
